There can be several reasons why a Nissan SR20DET engine timing chain should be changed. Everytime when you change the headgasket or take your engine apart the timing chain should be changed. It also should be changed if it gives rattling noise. When you have more than 120k on the odo then your chain tensioner and chain have arrived to the end of their life and you could hear this rattling noise.
Before you start to change your SR20DET timing chain you will need to take off the front cover which can take a while. You can also work on the lower tensioner if you take off the camshaft sprocket cover.
So what makes this rattling noise?
1. You can either have a worn or stuck tensioner or your tensioner is just simply broken.
2. Your oil pressure is too low which could flap your timing chain and hit the guides.
To begin:
1. Set your engine to top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke for the first cylinder. Bear in mind that the crankshaft rotates twice while the camshaft once.
2. Remove the valve cover
3. Take off the upper timing chain guide. Here you can also confirm the TDC position of the first cylinder if you check the cam lobes. Unscrew the two bolts from between the two camshafts. These bolts hold the upper chain guide.
4. Check the wear on the chain guide.
5. Remove the distributor.
6. Remove cam sprockets.
