Nissan SR20DET 8CW Crankshaft for 180SX, 200SX and Pulsar GTi-R
Brand new Nissan SR20DET crankshaft with 8 counterweights for engine rebuilds and replacement of a worn or damaged crankshaft. This is an aftermarket crankshaft imported from Japan. It is not a used, remanufactured or reground unit.
Two Crankshaft Options Available
Select the correct version from the dropdown before adding to your basket:
- 180SX, 200SX – 8CW: Crankshaft option for Nissan 180SX and 200SX SR20DET applications.
- Pulsar GTi-R – 8CW (Standard): Crankshaft option for the Nissan Pulsar GTi-R RNN14 SR20DET engine.
Both options have 8 counterweights. These are separate application choices. Select the version for your engine rather than treating the 180SX/200SX and GTi-R options as identical.
The optional bearing package is a separate choice. The 200SX bearing set is not suitable for a standard GTi-R engine. For the GTi-R please select its crankshaft option without the 200SX bearing package and source the correct GTi-R bearings separately.
The optional bearing package includes STD main bearings, con rod bearings and thrust washers. Bearings are supplied only when the bearing option is selected.
The optional 200SX bearing set is not suitable for a standard Pulsar or Sunny GTiR engine. If you are rebuilding a GTiR with its original connecting rods please order the crankshaft without the bearing option and source the correct GTiR bearings separately.
A key difference is the con rod bearing width. Common non-GTiR SR20 applications use approximately 17mm wide shells. Original GTiR rods use approximately 19mm wide shells. Main bearing specifications also differ between applications.
Choose bearings to match the block and connecting rods being used. If the engine has aftermarket rods follow the rod manufacturer's bearing specification. The engine builder must measure the journals and check the assembled oil clearances before final assembly.
SR20 Crankshafts – 4CW vs 8CW Explained
CW means counterweights. These are the weighted sections of the crankshaft that help balance the rotating assembly. SR20 crankshafts are found in both four-counterweight and eight-counterweight designs.
- 8CW: Eight counterweights. This is the design supplied in this listing.
- 4CW: Four counterweights. Found in certain SR20 variants and often discussed as a lighter alternative for engine builds.
A four-counterweight crankshaft generally weighs less than an eight-counterweight version. However, lower weight alone does not establish that a crankshaft is better for a particular engine. The crank design and balance of the complete assembly matter too.
Counterweight count also does not confirm compatibility. Bearings, connecting rods and flywheel hardware still need to match the build. The comparison above is for reference. This listing supplies the 8CW crankshaft.
SR20DET Crankshaft Replacement Tips
Check Why the Original Crankshaft Failed
SR20 owners have reported bottom-end knocking followed by the discovery of a spun big-end bearing or damaged crankshaft journal. In some cases low oil level or an oil supply problem was involved.
Replacing the crankshaft does not fix the cause of an oil supply failure. During the rebuild inspect the oil pump and pickup. Check for damage or restrictions and investigate the original failure before running the rebuilt engine.
A New Crankshaft Still Needs Bearing Clearance Checks
STD describes the bearing size category. It does not guarantee the correct clearance in every engine. Nissan used bearing grades to account for small dimensional differences between components.
Have your engine builder measure the replacement crankshaft and check the main and big-end bearing clearances. Crankshaft end float should also be checked during assembly. Do not choose replacement bearings solely from the markings on the old crankshaft.
Eight Flywheel Bolts Do Not Guarantee Identical Fitment
One easily missed detail in SR20 crank swaps is the flywheel bolt specification. GTiR owners fitting other SR20 crankshafts have reported differences in the flywheel hardware.
Check the bolt thread, length and flywheel fit before assembly. An eight-bolt pattern alone does not confirm that the original GTiR bolts can be reused with a replacement crankshaft. Confirm the required hardware before ordering if you are unsure.
Match the Bearings to the Rods Actually Fitted
An engine sold as a GTiR unit may already have different connecting rods from an earlier rebuild. Equally, an SR20DET build may use aftermarket rods with their own bearing requirements.
Check the parts inside the engine rather than ordering bearings by the badge on the car. This helps avoid buying a bearing set with the wrong shell width or specification.
Check Balance When Changing Internal Parts
If the rebuild includes different pistons, connecting rods or a change of crankshaft design ask your engine builder to check the balance of the rotating assembly. This is particularly relevant when combining parts from different SR20 versions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this crankshaft new or reground?
It is brand new with standard-size journals. It is not a reground or remanufactured crankshaft.
Are bearings included?
Only when you select the optional bearing package. For a standard Pulsar or Sunny GTiR engine order the crankshaft without this package and obtain the correct GTiR bearings separately.
Are FWD and RWD SR20 crankshafts interchangeable?
Some SR20 crankshafts can be used across different engine layouts. However, this does not mean every version is identical. The bearings and flywheel hardware must be checked for the specific combination being assembled.
Which crankshaft option should I select?
Select “180SX, 200SX – 8CW” for the corresponding SR20DET application or “Pulsar GTi-R – 8CW (Standard)” for the GTi-R engine. If your engine has been swapped or uses different internal parts please contact us with the engine details before ordering.
