When Does a Belt Tensioner Need Replacing?

A worn pulley bearing can cause a squeaking, whistling or rough running noise, sometimes noticeable during start-up. A weakened tensioner spring can allow the belt to slip, while a damaged pulley or worn tensioner pivot can affect belt alignment and tracking.

A new pulley alone will not repair a weak tensioner spring or a worn pivot. If the tensioner mechanism is worn as well as the pulley bearing, replacing the complete assembly addresses both areas. Noise alone does not identify the faulty component: the belt, tensioner and other accessory pulleys should be inspected before replacement.
