It is highly recommended to order the balance shaft with the coupling cube. The genuine balance shaft coupling is made of soft material and even if you replace if with genuine one it will wear out fairly quickly. Our coupling is heat treated throughout and provide better durability.
Mitsubishi Outlander 2.2 DiD engines suffer from a bad balance shaft design. All years from Nov, 2011 to March 2018. Although many owners complained of this problem Mitsubishi have not called back these models.
It is very likely that before 2018 they became aware of the problem as they improved the balance shaft assembly design. 4N14 engines produced after March 2018 are no longer affected and our balance shaft WILL NOT FIT these later models. If you have a model after 2018 then you need to change/order the Coupling ONLY without the balance shaft.
Symptoms are rattling noise & tik-tik sound of the balance shaft. Sounds like a bag of spanners left inside the engine.
Cause of the problem are balance shaft and the balance shaft coupling cube. Can be seen here in this video:
Here we show in the video the rattling noise that this Outlander 4N14 engine gives:
The problem begs the question how to resolve this rattling sound. You've got several options. The source of the noise can be a worn coupling cube AND/OR a faulty balance shaft gear which usually has broken teeth.
You are lucky if Mitsubishi warranty still covers your vehicle. In that case you can ask the dealership to replace your balancing module with an upgraded version which was fitted models after March 2018.
Dealership will not change only the balance shaft or the coupling but replace the entire balancing assembly.
Unfortunately many owners are no longer covered by Mitsubishi warranty and they still have to resolve this problem. Options you've got:
1. Although you are no longer covered by warranty you can still walk in a dealership but then you will need to pay for parts as well as labor. This can result in a £2600+ bill. Your balancing module will be upgraded by the revised version and gives you a lifetime fix.
2. If your balance shaft is in good shape (no broken teeth) then it is worth replacing the coupler only. It usually has a huge play.
See pic below:
3. There is a new revised balance shaft kit available from other online stores. This new "revised" balancing unit is for 2.3 DiD engines but can be used to fit 2.2 DiD. It circulates online for around £2500. We don't sell this "new revised" set as it is actually a worse design by Mitsubishi than the first version. First balancer unit has a cube shaped coupler the revised unit has a round shaped coupling unit. Usually this revised design is offered by Mitsubishi on the Outlanders still covered by warranty.
With the first (stock) version of this Outlander balancing unit these diesel engines start to make noise ~50.000 miles. The new "revised" type will last only ~30.000 miles before it starts to make the same noise and issues as the first original version. It is just a heads up before you decide to go ahead and make a bald decision to spend £2500 on the new revised balancing unit.
4. If you've got broken teeth on the balance shaft then you can replace the old shaft AND the coupling cube. We offer both in our online store. In this case engine vibration will not occur and you don't have to be worried of lower oil pressure.
The problem occurs quite early after only 40K miles. It is worth changing the timing chain kit as well as the crankshaft seal.
Price for £189.99 includes the balancing shaft only!
