Why does the camshaft module need replacing?
A recurring fault reported by T6 owners after timing belt failure is cam lobes or the gears joining the camshafts slipping out of position. The engine can then refuse to start even after a new belt has been fitted and the external timing marks appear correct. Fitting the timing locks doesnt prove that every cam lobe is still correctly positioned.
The cams are built into the housing, and VW doesn’t intend them to be swapped separately in a normal repair. If a cam or the housing is damaged, you replace the complete module.
Checks before fitting
- After a belt failure inspect the rocker arms and valves for damage. Replacing the module alone may leave other damage unresolved.
- Dont copy the lobe positions from a damaged module. One T6 owner initially suspected the replacement was wrong because the old cams had slipped. Comparison with a known good assembly confirmed the new module was correct.
- The VW T6 workshop manual the sealant pattern is rather unclear. The VW T5 manual sepecifies a 2 mm bead but the illustrated path appeared to follow the groove at the housing's inner edge rather than the centre of the flat mating face. We advise everyone apply the sealant along the centre of the flat flange face before fitting the housing and tightening its bolts. Keep oil passages clear and use the sealant specification and tightening sequence required for your engine.
- Use the correct T6 timing tools and torque sequence. Before first start, turn the crank two full turns by hand as the repair procedure says. If it binds, stop and recheck the timing.
