BMW N55 Crankshaft Kit with Conrods and Bearings – 11217580483
BMW N55 crankshaft kit comprising a replacement crankshaft for OE reference 11217580483, six connecting rods, a main-bearing set and a big-end bearing set. Designed for bottom-end repairs on compatible BMW N55 / N55B30 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol engines.
This package brings together the principal rotating components and bearings required when an engine rebuild involves replacing a damaged crankshaft and connecting rods. It is intended for repairs following confirmed crankshaft journal damage, bearing failure or connecting-rod damage, subject to inspection of the remaining engine components.
Kit Contents
- 1 × crankshaft – replacement for BMW reference 11217580483.
- 6 × connecting rods – one for each cylinder.
- 1 × Kolbenschmidt crankshaft main-bearing set.
- 1 × Kolbenschmidt connecting-rod big-end bearing set.
The Kolbenschmidt main bearings support the crankshaft within the engine block, while the Kolbenschmidt big-end bearings fit between the connecting rods and the crankshaft’s connecting-rod journals.
Kolbenschmidt branding applies to the two bearing sets supplied in this kit. The crankshaft and connecting rods are separately sourced aftermarket replacement components.
Pistons, piston rings, timing components, gaskets, crankshaft seals and additional installation hardware are not included unless separately specified.
When Is a Crankshaft Kit Required?
A replacement crankshaft kit may be required when an engine inspection identifies:
- Scored, worn or damaged crankshaft journals.
- A spun main bearing or connecting-rod bearing.
- Crankshaft or bearing damage following loss of lubrication.
- Connecting rods with damaged or distorted big-end housings.
- A crankshaft that an engine specialist has assessed as unsuitable for reuse.
The condition of the engine block, bearing housings, pistons and lubrication system should be assessed before deciding the full scope of the rebuild.
Why Replace Connecting Rods After Bearing Failure?
A failed big-end bearing can damage both the crankshaft journal and the connecting rod that surrounds it. Fitting new bearing shells alone will not correct a damaged or distorted connecting-rod housing.
This kit includes six replacement conrods so that the rods can be renewed alongside the crankshaft and bearings. The engine builder must still check component dimensions and assembled bearing clearances before installation.
BMW N55 / N55B30 Applications
This kit is intended for compatible N55 engines using crankshaft reference 11217580483. Application examples for this crankshaft reference include the following vehicles when equipped with the appropriate N55 engine:
| BMW range | Model | Chassis |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Series | 135i | E82, E88 |
| 3 Series | 335i / applicable xDrive versions | E90, E91, E92, E93, F30 |
| 3 Series Gran Turismo | 335i / applicable xDrive versions | F34 |
| 4 Series | 435i / applicable xDrive versions | F32, F33, F36 |
| 5 Series | 535i / applicable xDrive versions | F07, F10, F11 |
| 6 Series | 640i / applicable xDrive versions | F06, F12, F13 |
| 7 Series | Selected N55-powered 740i / 740Li versions | F01, F02 |
| X3 / X4 | xDrive35i | F25, F26 |
| X5 | Selected N55-powered 35i versions | E70, F15 |
| X6 | xDrive35i | E71, F16 |
Please check compatibility before ordering. The table identifies applications of the crankshaft reference; complete-kit suitability also depends on the connecting-rod and bearing specification. Model badge and registration year alone are insufficient, particularly where an engine has previously been replaced.
Crankshaft Identification: 11217580483
- BMW reference: 11217580483
- Alternative number format: 11 21 7 580 483
- Short reference: 7580483
- Engine family: BMW N55 / N55B30
BMW also used crankshaft reference 11217602972 in selected N55 applications. That reference relates to a different original crankshaft specification and is not the reference offered in this listing. Vehicles requiring 11217602972 should not be ordered against this kit without separate compatibility confirmation.
This is a replacement-parts kit. BMW names and OE references are used for identification and compatibility purposes; the crankshaft and connecting rods are aftermarket replacement components.
Installation and Bearing-Clearance Checks
Professional engine assembly is required. A new crankshaft and new bearings still require dimensional checks: correct oil clearance depends on the crankshaft journals, bearing shells and assembled housing dimensions.
- Confirm the crankshaft, connecting-rod and bearing specifications before assembly.
- Inspect the engine block and main-bearing housings for damage.
- Measure main-bearing and big-end bearing clearances.
- Check crankshaft end float and free rotation.
- Follow the applicable tightening procedures and renew fasteners where required.
- Identify and rectify the cause of the original failure.
Following bearing damage, metal particles can remain in the lubrication system and damage replacement components. Oil passages and affected lubrication components must be assessed and cleaned or replaced as appropriate before restarting the engine.
For a compatibility check, please provide your VIN, engine identification and original crankshaft reference before ordering.
