VW Audi 1.9 TDI Hydraulic Lifter Set: 8 FAI BFS101S
We supply eight brand new FAI BFS101S black hardened hydraulic lifters for compatible VW, Audi, SEAT and Skoda engines. You recieve a complete set for one four-cylinder eight-valve engine. These parts are also known as hydraulic tappets or camshaft followers.
BFS101S is the part number for each individual lifter. This listing supplies eight. Applications include the listed 1.9 TDI PD engines and selected 2.0 TDI PD eight-valve engines.
Product specification
- 8 × FAI BFS101S hydraulic bucket tappets
- Black finish with a heat-treated oil-based coating
- Two internal springs
- 35 mm diameter and 26 mm height
- For inlet and exhaust valves
Why the lifter specification matters
Hydraulic lifters can look similar while having different coatings and internal designs. FAI specifies a heat-treated oil-based coating and two springs for BFS101S. Its uncoated BFS66S uses one spring.
FAI confirms that BFS101S can replace BFS66S where applicable but BFS66S cannot replace BFS101S. Matching the diameter and height alone isnt enough. The diferences are explained in FAI technical bulletin TB0075. This comparison concerns the two FAI specifications. It doesnt mean every original VW lifter was uncoated.
1.9 TDI PD engine compatibility
The tables cover selected 1.9 TDI PD eight-valve applications. Years show the combined range for the listed versions. Individual engine codes and body styles may cover a shorter period. Match the engine code as well as the model and year.

Before fitting new lifters
Inspect the camshaft lobes as well as the old lifter faces. New lifters shouldnt be fitted against a worn camshaft. Check the lifter bores and oil supply and investigate the cause of the wear before installing the replacement set.
On a PD engine diesel contamination is another reason to look beyond the worn lifters. Leaking injector seals or worn injector bores can allow fuel into the egnine oil. A rising oil level or a noticeable diesel smell needs investigation. The coating on a new lifter cannot compensate for contaminated oil.
Have the lifters fitted by a qualified mechanic using the correct preparation and installation procedure. Filling them with oil and immediately starting the engine isnt a substitute for that procedure. Follow any specified settling time before rotating or starting the engine.
FAI's PD camshaft installation bulletin TB0098 advises checking that the tappets move freely in their bores and manually rotating the engine through two complete turn before start-up to confirm free movement. Follow the timing and preparation steps in the correct sequence. Check the injector adjustment seperately if the injector operating mechanism has been disturbed.
Use engine oil with the correct VW approval for your engine and service regime. These FAI lifters are intended for standard unmodified engine applications.
